Who is YipitData? What do you do?
YipitData is the trusted source of alternative data insights for 450+ of the world’s largest public and private investment funds and companies. We answer key questions about e-commerce and consumer purchase trends by providing actionable data and insights, synthesized from billions of data points to help our clients make better business decisions.
What is your methodology?
Our products are based on first-party data (our web-scraped data and our email receipt data) and third-party data (licensed from third party providers).
How do you work with journalists?
We work with journalists across multiple sectors to provide meaningful and timely data and insights to support their stories on anything from company specific reporting to industry-wide trend pieces.
Who are your customers? Can you name any funds or companies that work with your data?
We work with 450+ businesses ranging from investment funds to companies across a variety of sectors. On the investor side, our clients are PMs, research teams/analysts, For corporates, we are typically working with the C-Suite (CEO, CFO, CMO, CIO), business intelligence, data and analytics teams and merchandising.
Are you selling personal data?
We de-identify or aggregate information, and we also implement controls so that the information won’t be linked back to an individual. De-identified or aggregated information may still be considered personal data under some laws (ex: GDPR); even so, this de-identified data still does not directly identify individuals.
How do you get this data?
We collect it ourselves (e.g. by scraping publicly available data), or we work with third party data partners.
What are the company’s current web-scraping practices?
We only collect publicly available data. i.e. data that is available without being logged in or agreeing to terms and conditions while collecting it.
Do companies know you are scraping their websites?
We identify ourselves in all of our web-scraping.
Doesn't this create a market advantage for those who can afford your reports?
Institutional investors are in the business of making the most informed decisions they can. Their teams consider a myriad of data to drive their decisions and we are often one of many inputs they are referencing. The same is generally true for the corporate companies we work with. Our products are publicly available for purchase.
How does your email receipt survey panel work?
Our email receipt panel data is gathered from consumers who affirmatively opt in to provide access to their inbox in order to create de-identified and aggregated research from their commercial messages.
Companies (ex. App Annie, now data.ai) have been caught lying about using anonymized and aggregated data. How do I know you are telling the truth about protecting consumer data?
We keep our privacy policy up-to-date to reflect our current data practices (YipitData’s privacy notice is available here; Edison’s privacy policy is available here). Edison’s practices are also TrustArc certified, which means we have been vetted by an independent third party that certifies we do all of the things we say we do in managing data responsibly.
How do you make sure your third party data partners are compliant with YipitData’s expectations?
YipitData engages in a robust due diligence process of any potential data partners and re-diligences all existing data partners annually. During this process, we confirm the data set is in line with our overarching compliance framework and the policies and practices we have in place for our entire suite of products. Our in-house legal and compliance department regularly reviews our policies with our outside advisors to ensure they are aligned with the most up-to-date legal and regulatory requirements.
What type of data do you license?
We work with data from a range of partners and sources who have passed our rigorous diligence process, including: email receipt; credit and debit transaction data; app data.
