Home Depot beats Amazon and Lowe’s in home improvement sales
Home Depot dominates the home improvement category, with a third of market share in online and offline sales. Behind Home Depot are Amazon, Lowes, and Walmart with about 15% to 20% GMV share each.
Amazon dominates home office category
Amazon significantly outpaces peers like Walmart and Target in online home office GMV: the retailer’s online sales are more than double all their closest competitors combined. However, other big box and furniture pure players have grown their sales in the category over the course of the pandemic. From 2Q20 to 3Q22, Target, for example, surpassed Wayfair in online office furniture sales and grew to a GMV share of 14%.
Third-Party Food Delivery: 2Q22 Update
Halfway through 2022, YipitData is once again looking at the market dynamics in the third-party delivery space. DoorDash continues to be the primary leader in the third-party delivery space, and has continued to grow through 2Q22. Smaller cities such as Memphis and Sacramento have experienced massive growth in total third-party sales in 2Q22.
Premium brands less affected by retail customers curbing spending
In YipitData’s 2Q22 Home Goods Index: Pure Players, Wayfair, Home Goods, and Big Lots had the largest home goods market share among pure players. However, despite inflation, higher-priced brands saw the largest growth in market share.
Average order value rises amid inflation in home goods
Average order values (AOV) have increased across all top 10 retailers in YipitData’s 2Q22 Home Goods Index: Pure Players, with the exception of Ikea. Restoration Hardware, for example, saw a 47% increase in average order value between H1 2020 and H1 2022. The brand’s AOV is now over $1,200.
Wayfair Loses Market Share to Omnichannel Retailers
In YipitData’s 2Q22 Home Goods Market Share Index: Pure Players, Wayfair continued to have the largest market share at 14.41%. However, the retailer is ceding dominance – down 1.04ppt in total share YoY – as omnichannel retailers grow and consumers return to store.
Furniture’s GMV Growth Slows at Amazon in 2Q22
Amazon grew its market share 4.70 ppts YoY in 2Q22. Despite last year's Prime Day occurring in June (2Q21) and this year's in July (3Q22), almost all home goods subcategories had positive year-over-year growth, highlighting Amazon’s continued strength in the home goods retail industry. Amazon ‘Home’ category sees largest boost in sales on Prime Day 2022
Prime Day is without a doubt one of ecommerce’s biggest sale events of the year. Over the course of two days, Prime members have access to significant discounts on many items across categories such as kitchen, decor, bath and bedding. While the ecommerce giant didn’t reveal total sales, our insights from this year’s Prime Day dive deep into brand share and categories that have seen significant growth or decline since last year.
State of the Home Goods Industry
The home category won big during 2020 and 2021, with both multi-category generalists and home-focused retailers reporting record sales. Looking at the top 30 pure-play furniture retailers, YipitData found consistent year-over-year GMV growth during the period. However, in both March and April 2022, year-over-year GMV has declined in the category.
Home Goods Pure Play Winners and Losers
Wayfair remains the dominant pure player in the home category. However, the retailer’s market share has dipped since the height of the pandemic, from over 30% in April 2020 to about 20% in April 2022. At the same time, Pottery Barn and HomeGoods saw the highest YoY growth in market share in Q1 2022 at 1% and 0.6%, respectively.
